Playing in the community

The Playful Pittsburgh Collaborative loves to play in the Pittsburgh area. In raising awareness that play is beneficial for all people, as well as inspiring others through playful activities, we are having a summer full of excitement and play!

To kick of the summer, we hosted our annual event, Ultimate Play Day, at the Whitehall Public Library. We had so much fun playing with everyone who came to the event, from making gravity art to making capes to dancing, to completing an obstacle course! You can find more pictures from Ultimate Play Day HERE

We have continued to enjoy facilitating play pop-ups in the community this summer as well! Our aim for play pop-ups is to facilitate and encourage play through events in communities around Pittsburgh. We partnered with our member organization, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, for the 33rd Annual EQT Children’s Theater Festival. We had jumbo dominos, hula hoops, and a large connect four game at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center.

In partnership with Hazelwood Initiative, we had another community play pop-up in Hazelwood at the Second Avenue Market with a jumbo Connect Four, cornhole, and a balance beam. A little rain couldn’t keep us all from playing.

We had two play pop-ups in Hazelwood in May and June at the KaBOOM! Playground, with cornhole, jumbo Connect Four, food, music and other fun games!

We really enjoy our play pop-ups and have more scheduled for this summer. You can check the calendar events page HERE to find out when and where they are! If you are hosting a community event, the Playful Pittsburgh Collaborative has play boxes and resources available to be borrowed through a sign out request. Play is beneficial for people of all ages and we hope to continue promoting that idea throughout the community, especially through play pop-ups.
