Racing down the slide. Trying to touch the sky with each pump of your legs on the swing. Making memories with your friends. Thinking about all the ways you can play at a park or playground yet?
I remember the freedom I felt as a kid being allowed to walk with my friends to the park close to my house and spend the afternoon playing. Not only did it get us all out of the house, but there were endless ways we could keep ourselves occupied. I was lucky enough to be within walking distance to a park, but that isn’t the reality for everyone. United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania’s fitUnited initiative is working to change that.
fitUnited works to mobilize and motivate the community to improve healthy eating and physical activity for children. Every year, fitUnited partners with a local community to renovate a play space in need of some TLC to increase access to safe play spaces for kids. Whether it is painting a walking track, planting trees, building benches, or re-mulching a playground, volunteers work passionately to help transform spaces to encourage kids to come out and play. Since fitUnited’s first Day of Action in 2015, about 569 volunteers have renovated play spaces to improve physical activity opportunities for over 4,700 kids in our local communities.
Want to get in on the action? For 2018, we’ve partnered with the Live Well Borough of Homestead to update McLean Park. Volunteers will be painting, cleaning, mulching and more to renovate a space accessible to 800 kids. Join us on June 16th from 8:30am – 12pm to help ensure more children in our community have access to places to play. Sign up today at: http://bit.ly/fitUnitedDayofAction
